WebAtmel had their own ARM chips (the AT91 series) but they weren't very successful. They also had the AVR range of low cost 8-bit CPUs of their own design. AVR wasn't very successful either but they used them inside other chips. Their main competitor was Microchip's PIC chips which were much more successful. I am not sure if starting a new project I would choose the xmega if it was a long term production project.
